Participants will learn how to conduct remote earth observing mapping,  and have hands-on practical experience flying small drones (less than 2 kg).

Modules:

Introduction

Formal lectures, discussions and group activities. Some of the topics covered:

  • How to fly a drone
  • Software setup
  • Safety guidelines when using a drone

Drone Use

Field module where participants will gain experience in

  • basic drone operation, takeoff and landing, changing flight altitude, & adjusting drone camera/video settings.
  • practical experience flying small drones (weighing less than 2 kg)

Practical activities are conducted in-field

Mapping

This module teaches participants how to conduct remote earth observing mapping. Participants will learn how to use automous functions to capture data with different mapping parameters

Planning

In the Final module, we outline how to implement drone mapping.

  • Planning for environmental variability
  • Planning for Drone Regulation policy, which will affect how mapping is conducted at various sites

Formal lectures, discussions and interactive group activities.  Laboratory exercises and a field activity.

This course will provide you with an introduction to using drones as mapping tools and will introduce you to the application of drones for mapping seagrass.

This module teaches participants how to conduct remote earth observing mapping. Participants will learn how to use automous functions to capture data with different mapping parameters.  You will learn about the basics of aerodynamics, flight navigation systems, data analysis, and have hands-on practical experience flying small drones (less than 2 kg).

Presentations are targeted at participants with a reasonable proficiency in English and an education level of year 12 to first year university.

Participants will learn

  • flight navigation systems
  • data analysis

Field module where participants will gain experience in

  • basic drone operation, takeoff and landing, changing flight altitude, & adjusting drone camera/video settings.
  • practical experience flying small drones (weighing less than 2 kg)

Practical activities are conducted in-field

ACHIEVEMENT

Participants must demonstrate competency across 5 core units, during the training event
