Global Seagrass Observing Network. Assessment, monitoring, conservation, education of seagrass meadows.#seagrasswatch #seagrassfutures

The extent of seagrass at UG1 has significantly im The extent of seagrass at UG1 has significantly improved and abundance increased from Very Poor to Poor. Seagrass at UG2 remains extensive, with high epiphyte cover on leaves (exceeding 75%).
Additionally, there was notable coverage of benthic turf algae/cyanobacteria observed throughout both sites.
Numerous Dugong grazing trails were observed across the extensive Urangan seagrass meadow.
Overall, the seagrass at Urangan is in a FAIR state.

Seagrass-Watch Director, Len McKenzie was recently Seagrass-Watch Director, Len McKenzie was recently invited to present at the First Arabian Regional Scientific Seagrass Workshop, held in Abu Dhabi (UAE), 30 April - 1 May 2025.
Hosted by the Yas SeaWorld Research & Rescue Center (the largest dedicated marine research, rescue, rehabilitation and return center in the region), the first Arabian Regional Scientific Seagrass Workshop, was organised in partnership with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) – Dugong-MOU Secretariat
The event brought together leading marine researchers and environmental experts from United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, State of Qatar, Kingdom of Bahrain, State of Kuwait, Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and Sultanate of Oman to spotlight the vital role of seagrass habitats in Arabian coastal ecosystems, share the current status of seagrass research and knowledge in the region, and discuss the way forward to improve the conservation of seagrass.

Seagrass are an important marine ecosystem of the Seagrass are an important marine ecosystem of the Fiji Islands. Six seagrass species have been confirmed from five broad categories of seagrass habitats in the archipelago.
Seagrass meadows cover around 59 km2, with high confidence, of Fiji's shallow water habitats. Long-term monitoring of seagrass abundance, species composition, and seed banks at eight sentinel sites, shows relatively stable seagrass condition, with no long-term trends.

However, recent assessments in April 2025, at both long-term monitoring sites have indicated a decline in seagrass abundance, shifting from "Good" to "Fair."
