Len McKenzie and Rudi Yoshida (SW HQ) visited South East Queensland to catch up with local Seagrass-Watch groups and conduct workshops in Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast. Participants from the three regions in SEQ (including Noosa, Moreton Bay and Gold Coast) learnt seagrass biology, ecology, identification, and Seagrass-Watch monitoring. On Thursday 22nd, Len and Rudi met up with Keira Price to monitor a Moreton Bay site at Victoria Point (VP3). The site was dominated by Zostera capricorni and Halophila ovalis, with very high epiphtyic algae cover and sediment of Mud/Sand.

The following day was spent at Currumbin meeting Sheila Davis (Seagrass-Watch Gold Coast Local coordinator) and her team at Gecko House and also catching up with Paul Finn (Seagrass-Watch Moreton Bay Local coordinator). It was then down to Currumbin Creek to locate a suitable meadow for the Gold Coast workshop. There have been no documented records of seagrass in Currumin Creek, however narrow meadows of Zostera capricorni and Halophila ovalis were located fringing the creek banks. Voucher specimens were collected for the Seagrass-Watch herbarium.

Carla Sbrocchi and Jane Smith from the Community Environment Network (NSW) also flew in to attend. The afternoon field session moved to Wellington Point. The site is comprised of Mud/Sand and has a lush Zostera Capricorni dominated meadow with patches of Halophila ovalis. Click Here to download the Workshop feedback pdf

Gecko House was the venue for the morning session of the Seagrass-Watch Gold Coast Workshop. Gecko House is on the banks of Currumbin Creek and houses office/ library/ workspace and volunteer kitchen/lounge downstairs and the meeting hall upstairs for Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council Assn. Inc (Gecko). The workshop included lessons on seagrass identification, background on seagrass ecology and importance, and how to monitor seagrasses using the Seagrass-Watch protocols. The afternoon field session moved to Currumbin Creek, where the 3 transects were run parallel to the shore, a little different to the standard Seagrass-Watch monitoring methods. Pulau Semakau (Singapore) : 25 November 2007It was a bright sunny day and the seagrassers gathered at Marina South Pier, all excited to embark on the last monitoring trip for this year. We set out on what seemed to be an extremely long boat ride to Semakau. The Enhalus on Semakau were blooming? There were lots of the styrofoam looking male flowers everywhere. What a good sight to behold on our last trip! There was also some live firing going on at a nearby island and we were jolted to our feet when the huge KAPOW sent shockwaves (ok, that was a little to exaggerated). In no time, the seagrassers were all caught up with photographing the huge cloud of smoke. It was a good last trip for TeamSeagrass and we sure had accomplished a lot this year. So on behalf of TeamSeagrass, a big THANKS to all volunteers, coordinators, boat captains who had helped us make this a huge success. Hope to see everyone again next year! Clean and Green Jamboree (Singapore) : 04 November 2007Clean and Green Jamboree is a celebration of all things green in Singapore. Previously just a week of events, this year, it has been extended to a full month! This year is also the first time, the green theme includes seagrasses! TeamSeagrass led by the intrepid Miss Siti set up a booth at the event to share with the public about seagrasses! Together with a game designed by Nor Aishah, Team members used photos and posters to share about the importance of seagrasses. And Gaytri's gorgeous one-of-a-kind banner takes pride of place at the booth. And here is Gaytri (bottom right) rubbing sholders with PM LEE who came by our booth and asked how Chek Jawa was doing after the flash floods earlier this year. Talk about being down with it eh?Text: Team Seagrass-Singapore. TeamSeagrass Website Click here . For More information: Click here
