Pulau Semakau (Singapore): 18 October 2009

It's our LAST major monitoring for the year! And the Team is back out in booties on the vast vast seagrass meadows of Pulau Semakau! Today we are joined by the Scouts! Led by seagrasser Tan Sijie, who is also very active with the Scouts. This is part of Sijie's SWA Discovery Workshop, of the Scouts of the World Award programme, to introduce local and international Scouts to Singapore's wild places and the work being done for them. The shores of Semakau are vast!

Today, the Enhalus acoroides were blooming! The Scouts are attached to the Team to help do the monitoring. We had a low turn out of the Team this trip, so it was a godsend to have the extra help. And we hope the Scouts had a good experience learning and discovering about our seagrasses. For more pictures and interesting facts visit Team Seagrass Click Here

Sadly (for seagrass at least) the October monitoring indicated by far the lowest seagrass cover we have ever seen at this site.  What recovery was occurring, was most noticeable at the landward end of the transects.  What little grass there was, was mostly young, short and had relatively low epi cover.  Algal cover was low and consisted of approximately equal amounts of foliose reds and Halimeda sp. It was an uneventful monitoring session eventhough it took us out of our normal routine as we had to wake up at 4:30am to catch the low tide and monitoring was done by torchlight - this is the earliest we have ever heard of a group monitoring TI2. It was probably the early hour that made us forget to bring the quadrats along, luckily for us Jane had a spare set with her. Lots of boats were anchored in the vicinity of the site but luckily none actually crossed into the monitoring plot, which was fortunate as we wouldn't have had the strength to lift the boats out of the way of the tape measures. A lot of the seagrasses leaves appeared to burnt or dead. Even getting up at this awful hour of the morning did have a slight reward, the sunrise was awesome!. Text Sally Marrington and Zara Davies

We wish to acknowledge the traditional owners on whose sea areas we are monitoring.  Text Jane Mellors
