Seagrass-Watch Education DaysSeagrass-Watch education days are generally half day intensives and include a presentation covering background information on the importance of seagrass, Seagrass-Watch monitoring methods and a field component. They are focused toward primary and secondary school students Classroom Component (approx. 1-1.5 hours duration)The classroom component normally includes: Presentation - Seagrass Ecology & Seagrass-Watch • threats to seagrass • what is Seagrass-Watch • Seagrass-Watch sampling protocols Laboratory exercise • seagrass identification Classroom exercise • Seagrass-Watch activity books Field Component (approx 2 hours duration)The field component will include “hands-on” activities and demonstrations targeted at enhancing student skills gained in the classroom. The student will also be observed and reviewed by the instructors as they watch for and assess the student’s general demeanor, communication skills and safety awareness in the field. For the field component, students will need:
Remember: You will be walking across a seagrass meadow exposed with the tide, through shallow water. It may be wet and muddy. Students wishing to attend education days must be competent and interested in conservation. Sometimes younger students do tend to get bored quickly and loose interest as the day progresses.
